Often overlooked in favour of its illustrious next-door neighbour Bali, the beautiful island of Lombok has an allure of its own with immaculate beaches, epic surf breaks and an unspoilt forested interior.
Lombok may not be the most famous of Indonesia鈥檚 islands, but away from the tourist trail you will find powder-fine sands, a traditional culture and a relaxed way of life. Stretching for 10 km along the western coast, Senggigi is Lombok鈥檚 most popular beach resort and for good reason. Here sun-kissed bays are backed by groves of coconut palms, with jungle-clad mountains rising in the distance.
Senggigi is also the gateway to the legendary Gili Islands. Lying a short distance from Lombok鈥檚 northwest coast, these three palm-fringed islets are mini-paradises set in shimmering blue waters. As well as dazzling beaches, the snorkelling and diving here is nothing short of incredible, with rich coral reefs, wrecks, colourful fish and a number of excellent dive schools.
The majestic peak of Mount Rinjani dominates Lombok鈥檚 skyline at over 3,700 metres. The view of this still-active volcano is spectacular, but for an even better one why not tackle the three-day trek to its crater rim for a stunning panorama over the island. When you鈥檙e not relaxing on the beach, you can get in an insight into the little-known culture of Lombok鈥檚 Sasak community by exploring the tribal villages by bike.
